Идея о совместном проекте Национального художественного музея Республики Беларусь и Лиги добровольного труда молодёжи родилась как раз осенью 2016 года. Помню, что сама возможность поработать в сфере музейного образования вместе с волонтером из одной из европейских стран, засиявшая ярко на музейном небосклоне в то утро, мне показалась очень привлекательной. Поэтому немедля и точно в срок я сформировала список профессиональных компетенций для музейного волонтера.
Следующим шагом стала проектная заявка, которая (!!!) получила финансовую поддержку Европейской волонтёрской службы и вот, уже в начале ноября мы встречали Алис Гоанг.

Hello, nice to meet you all! My name is Alice, and I live in Saint-Ouen, a small city just north of Paris, in France. After my master degree in IT, I wanted to volunteer and travel the world, which is why I chose to do an EVS (European Voluntary Service). The EVS program is an opportunity to live abroad to work in different projects (from 3 months to 12 months) and help the local community. The projects range from youth work, sport work, cultural work, environemental work etc.
Belarus and me
I arrived in Belarus in november. Such a surprise for me! It was hard to expect anything before coming here – Belarus is such an unknown country after all. I didn’t know anything about this land, and after one month, I still don’t know as much as I’d like to, but I work with and talk to Belarusian people everyday. This enriches my life and gives me the opportunity to learn and grow everyday. Belarusian people are incredibly heart-warmed and a generous people. Sometimes, the customs between Belarus and France are very different, but I enjoy being able to experience another way of living. I’m currently living in the south of Minsk with 3 roommates, but I work in the center, either in the Museum of Fine Arts or the office of the League of Youth Volunteer Service.
About the Museum of Fine Arts of Belarus
What a dream for me to work in a museum, especially one that is so grand! I’ve been part of several masterclasses and workshops in different museums of Paris for years, and I also enjoy visiting and discovering more museums (I still didn’t visit all of them, there are so much). My favorite museums in Paris are Cluny (the national museum of the Mddle Ages), Orsay (a wonderful collection of immpressionism and post-impressionism work) and of course the Louvre Museum. I love history, and have a degree in History from the Sorbonne university (Paris I). For me this is a dream come true, and my work here as been inspiring me to work in this field back in France.
Museums, interactivity and changes
The first modern museums appeared in Europe in the XVIIIth century. But in recent decades, its rôle and image changed for the audience. As our society’s values and resources have been changing, as must the museums change. Rather than being an collection-driven institution, museums need to become more visitor-centred. Nowadays, pictures and knowledge is at our fingers’ tips thanks to the Internet, which means that museums need to offer another value in order to stay relevant.
Several studies have underlight the gap in museum attendance between the moment where people leave the school system, to the moment where they bring their own children to the museum. This is a new challenge for museums to undertake ! Youth is a target that several museums around the world are trying to reach with different strategies, and the National Museum of Fine Arts of Belarus is no different.
This challenge is two-fold: How can such an instituion be welcoming and entertaining without compromising on their standards and level of scholarship ? For now, most museums think mainly about their improving their collections and organizing new exhibits, but thought must also be put into how to welcome the visitors.
How to change
Today the shift of attitude is tangible in France: Cluny is undertaking years of renovation, the Louvre museum implements different strategies to appeal to youth, such as the Louvre nintendo DS app, workshops for families, children and/or adults, conferences and programs for disavantaged youth or disabled people.
The Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund, explores this question and argues that an improved visitor experience can only benefit the museum. The museum of contemporary Art in San Diego is currently witnessing a skyrocketing rate of membership, attendances and donations thanks to these changes. The Cleveland Museum of Art’s deputy director, which undertook the same changes, said « We returned to the principles that guided the museum’s founding in 1916, which is to become a museum for all people,”
Feedback from the people should be asked and taken in careful consideration: audio guide, guided tour etc, need an educational but also an entertaining value. One of the first consideration is that people learn in different ways: the exhibits should be enriching in different way and speak to all of ours senses. But museum experience involve more than curators and educators: everything and everyone in contact with the visitor have a rôle in this mission: the cloakroom intendant, the staff, the gift shop and the café should be a welcoming and positive experience.

Да, именно так называется моя экскурсия, которую я готовила в течение года. Тот, кто знает, что всерьёз я начала изучать английский язык всего лишь три года назад, немало удивится. Написать экскурсию на иностранном языке - это мой способ изучения иностранного языка. Таким же образом я когда-то выучила белорусский язык. Это было непросто, год работы над текстом, над произношением, грамматическими конструкциями, но результат не заставил себя ждать. Я его почувствовала уже через несколько месяцев, потому что действительно массивы новых слов и выражений пополняли мой словарный запас. Мотивация моя укреплялась с каждым днём. Я успешно закончила работу над экскурсией на тему, которую вынесла в заглавие этой истории.

Nadezhda’s project
Nadezhda Krasutskaya have been implementing interactive programs a new audience (especially students and foreigners) and show the usual visitors a new side of the Museum. She’d like to make the museum more interesting and engage a new audience.
The English excursion spans the permanent collection of museum artworks, from the 18th and 19th century. After the excursion, which ends with landscape paintings, I introduce my workshop centered around Hubert Robert. This French painter was prominent in russian circles and numerous paintings are now held in Pushkin’s museum and the Ermitage Museum. His importance for his contemporaries, his involvement in French and Parisian’s history and his link to Russian artistic circles make him a perfect subject to conclude the excursion and link it to foreign art.

Уже во вторник, 5 декабря я провела экскурсию для волонтера Алины Ярец, а на следующий день, 6 декабря мы с Alice встречали группу десятиклассников из Лицея №1 г. Минска. Вера Алексеевна Гаевская, великолепный педагог и талантливый организатор (на самом деле, она - учитель информатики!) сказала, что дети с большим воодушевлением записывались на экскурсию на английском языке, а спросила она всех!!! И, что стоит особо отметить, ребята ничего не знали о Workshop и Alice.

Стремительное расширение целевой аудитории
Это произошло уже 13 декабря, когда мы, Nadin&Alice, провели первый интерактивный семинар для учителей английского языка, слушателей курсов повышения квалификации Академии последипломного образования, конечно, на английском языке! Жаль, что не сделали ни одного кадра на память, но могу сказать о прекрасном результате. Сразу же, по окончании семинара, один из педагогов записал группу школьников на музейный интерактивный проект. Счастливые, раскрасневшиеся от избытка прекрасных эмоций, улыбающиеся и благодарные педагоги, которые, к слову, в большинстве своём были впервые в музее (многие приехали из других городов Беларуси), уверена, придут в музей, уже с ребятами.
Но, а как же французский, спросите Вы...
Конечно, я воспользовалась тем, что родной язык Alice - французский и рассказала ей о интерактивном проекте для взрослых в усадебном доме Ваньковичей "В гостиной истинно дворянской...". Alice с радостью согласилась принять участие в нем и, более того, приготовила для гостей "французское угощение".

She also implemented a small French workshop in the interactive excursion of the Wankowich’s House, a manor owned by the Wankowich family, now devoted to the art and culture of the 19th century. Numerous French artworks and furnitures decorate the walls and rooms of this manor. To finish the excursion, we inserted a small French part, in which I talk in French, and then teach a bit of French, from a themed glossary. This glossary can be a Hosting/Recieving or Birthday glossary depending of the subject of the visit.

More to come… !
A lot more of projects are going to be implemented in order to make the Museum more welcoming and colorful. We are working on a glossary and courses for the curators, to make the experience more foreigner friendly. Another project especially target children to appeal to them by using Belarusian traditions and supersitions to transform the museum from its image of « cold institution » to a lively building of entertainment and learning.

There are also intercultural events in the making, like a Lunar New Year event or French themed exhibits. We are also preparing for more diverses workshops and activities to engage visitors and creating a more hands on experience, that fit today’s needs better.
My experience with Nadezhda has been incredible. I’ve been learning lot from seeing her work and it’s obvious that the passion and energy that drives her come from a deep love of the museum and a desire to share this love with other people. This work has been pushing me out of my comfort zone, but in the most fulfilling, enriching and interesting way. I’m actually seriously considering working in a museum back home!
